At the Melon Patch Home & Garden, our products are all about choice and choice is all about ‘green’. Whether you’re shopping for a unique gift in the retail store, choosing a stone veneer for your ensuite bathroom renovation, deliberating over what kind of flooring to install in your new business venture or staging your home for the real estate market, ‘green’ is not just another pretty colour!
The Melon Patch lives and breathes ‘green’, and we’re committed to sourcing sustainable products from global communities embracing fair trade practices as well as re-sourcing uses for discarded materials from renovations and upgrades.
We seek out the very best organic, wholesome products and healthy alternatives to toxic decorating issues.
For example…
Carpet Tiles are incredibly durable and can be individually replaced when worn or damaged. They’re easy to install and can be laid directly onto flooring using double-sided tape or a special adhesive. Lose the expense of fitting with this wonderfully flexible alternative.
Sisalis grown in Africa and South America. It is extracted from the agave cactus plant and has been used traditionally in the making of rope. Another incredibly durable material, sisal is coarser to the touch than wool and is, therefore, a sound choice for hallways and stairs. It’s available in a wide range of weaves, from herring-bone to boucle, and features warm, natural hues.
Sea grass and mountain grass comes in wide weaves with a shiny surface texture. While this can make for slippery and inappropriate floor coverings for stairways and high traffic areas, in great rooms, dining areas and bedrooms, these products glow in a wide variety of weaves and neutral shades.
Wool and paper rugs are more durable and tougher than you might imagine. Fabricated entirely from sustainable materials, they are made from softwood pulp coniferous trees! Paper is mixed with resin and then turned into yarn which is woven onto a natural jute or latex backing. These floor coverings are best used in areas of light to medium wear, rather than on stairs or under furniture resting on casters.
Natural Woolfrom sheep’s wool fleece contains lanolin, which is a natural stain inhibitor. And because it naturally absorbs moisture, fleece is anti-static! Pure wool carpet is the most durable and easiest floor covering to maintain. Cleaning guidelines are crucial with respect to natural materials because of their tendency to react to water. Avoid marks by following guidelines!

- They must be tested for pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals and formaldehyde.
- Textiles must achieve skin-friendly ph levels and they must be free of colour organic carriers.
Cork Flooring has remarkable qualities from an environmental and sustainable point of view, providing a marked departure from traditional hardwood. And it’s not new; it’s been around for a long time! Cork used in flooring comes from the cork tree. But it’s not made from the wood of the tree. It’s made from the bark! This constitutes a wonderfully sustainable advantage because a tree need not be uprooted in order to provide bark. A single cork tree can live as long as 200 years and bark from it can be used over and over again as flooring! Cork is an environmentally safe material and it is extremely durable. It’s naturally moisture-proof, it acts as a sound barrier, it features lots of elasticity so it’s not so subject to damage, it’s easy to install, easy to maintain and it provides a natural cushion for prolonged standing. Wow! Cork is available in a variety of colours and patterns and it comes in planks or in a tile format.
Bamboo Flooring is also environmentally friendly and sustainable. Technically, bamboo is grass, not wood. It can be harvested every five years. Studies show that bamboo flooring meets and exceeds the most popular hardwood brands for stability and durability and it does so at comparable price points. Most wood products are compared to oak and maple for their stability and durability. Northern Red Oak is the measure against which other hardwood floors are compared for stability. Stability is the natural expansion and contraction of wood in different climates over time. Bamboo is 50% more stable than Northern Red Oak! And bamboo is available in a variety of colours and patterns.
